Language Options

If you are going to Madrid it is important that you can understand and speak a little bit of Spanish. It is very important to speak Spanish because over half a billion people worldwide speak Spanish. Spanish is the official language in 21 countries and it is even an official language of the UN, the EU and other international organisations.

There are different ways to learn the language. You can sign up for a language exchange or take lessons in Spanish. If you choose a language exchange, you can look for people on the internet, advertisements in newspapers, at school or just get in touch with other students when you go out. These are known as "intercambios de idiomas", and there are many locals in Madrid that will teach you some Spanish, in exchange for you teaching them some English or any other language; and the best part about it is that: it´s for free! A good place to start looking for an intercambio de idiomas is a website called Loquo. With new listings every day, you are bound to find someone to help improve your Spanish.  Follow this link to see the most recent listings: Loquo Intercambios - Madrid. I can also recommend to place your own advert asking for language exchange. Surely you will get many response, so you can choose the best ones.

There are also many language schools advertising in Magazines, newspapers and on the internet. The prices and quality differ greatly, so a good thing is to compare different schools and find out which is the best school for you. Below are some listings of the more popular ones. Inform yourself about the spoken languages at school, and chose one where they only speak Spanish! That is hard at the beginning, but it's definitely the best way to learn it.
