Crime in Madrid

In general Madrid is a safe and peaceful country for tourists and business travellers. But we all know what happened on the 11th of March 2004, when Madrid was attacked by Islamic Extremists. And we all know that the the Basque separatist terrorist group, ETA (Euskadi ta Askatasuna - "Basque country and liberty") has been operating in Spain since the late 1960s but ETA attacks are almost exclusively directed against Spanish targets such as politicians, police, military, and journalists.

But the most common crime in Madrid is pickpocketing. When you are visiting Madrid, make sure that you never go on the street with original documents. Just make a copy from the original documents, in any case it won`t be any problem because in Spain copies also count as official documents. Pickpockets mostly work on the streets near the centre or the markets.

Precisely when you arrive in Madrid, brimming with your stuff, you should never lose sight of your things. It's common that one person distracts you by asking something, while his crony walks off with your belongings.

Even if you walk through the town and you are used to set down your bag if it disturbs you, don't do so in Madrid! Your bag might be gone faster as you are able to react.

Be also aware that your passport or credit card won’t be copied when you get money out of cashpoints. The safest way is to use the cashpoints situated inside the bank. You can use them even if the banks are closed.
